  • MSU proposes naming engineering college in honor of donor Asbjornson

    From MSU News Service

BOZEMAN – Montana State University is requesting that the state’s Board of Regents approve naming its College of Engineering the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering.

The regents will consider the naming request at their Nov. 16-17 meeting in Bozeman at the Strand Union Building. A full agenda for the two-day meeting will be available online here:

Montana University System and MSU policies permit major academic units, such as colleges, to be named in honor of an individual in recognition of service to the university or significant financial contributions.

The naming of the College of Engineering is a tribute to Asbjornson, a native of Winifred, and a 1960 MSU graduate. In 2014, Asbjornson committed $50 million to MSU — the largest private gift in state history — to fund a new engineering building, which is now under construction on the south side of campus.

In addition, Asbjornson has funded $2 million in research grants to the College of Engineering, given $1 million to establish a scholarship endowment for Montana students coming from small high schools, and established another scholarship for graduates of his hometown Winifred High School to attend MSU. He has also served on the College of Engineering Advisory Council and currently serves on the Board of Governors for the MSU Alumni Foundation. The company Asbjornson founded, AAON, has hired many MSU engineering graduates.

Public comments on the naming request can be submitted by letter to University Communications, c/o Name Change Comments, P.O. Box 172220, Bozeman, MT 59717-2220 or by email to
